Bihar Police arrest accused in murder of VIP chief Mukesh Sahani’s father, say unpaid loan was motive

A day after the father of Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahani was killed at his home, the police in Bihar’s Darbhanga on Wednesday arrested a local man in connection with the murder over unpaid loan of Rs 1.5 lakh.

According to the Darbhanga police, the accused told them he killed Jitan Sahani, 70, as he was unable to pay the loan and its interest back to the VIP chief’s father. Former state minister Mukesh Sahni’s father was found stabbed to death at his home at Supaul Bazar under the Ghanshyampur block on July 17.

“We have arrested Afzala village resident Qazim Ansari, 40, who had taken a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh in three equal instalments on four per cent monthly interest in 2023. He had also mortgaged his land papers against the loan. As he had been unable to pay back the loan with its interest, Ansari decided to kill Jitan Sahani,” Jagunath Reddy, Senior Superintendent of Police, Darbhanga, told reporters on Wednesday evening.

Reddy said Ansari and his associates entered the house of Jitan Sahani at Supaul Bazar of Biraul at around 1.30 pm on the intervening night of July 16 and July 17. “He woke up Jitan and asked for his land papers. Qazim also tried unsuccessfully to look for his land papers in one of the almirahs. As Jitan resisted it, he was attacked with a knife by Qazim several times in his stomach and surrounding areas,” the police officer added.

Jitan Sahani was found dead by a house attendant in the morning the next day.
